The Mad Hatter Philip Treacy

“What a regrettably large head you have.  I would very much like to hat it.  I used to hat The White Queen, you know.  Her head was so small,” Tim Burton’s version of the Mad Hatter tells the Red Queen.  It seems a lot of hatters get to work with the heads of royals… Philip Treacy is the Irish milliner future Princess Kate is a huge fan of.  Born in Galway, Treacy studied journalism at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.  Treacy is now based in London and runs a very successful business there.  He created hats for Alexander McQueen’s collection for Givenchy, as well as Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel.  Treacy has also designed for Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen, and Valentino, as well as for the Harry Potter movies.  One of his more famous toppers was Sarah Jessica Parker’s for the London premiere of Sex and the City (pictured left).   One of the world’s wackiest and most innovative dressers on the planet, Lady Gaga, is gaga for Treacy, as well.  He has designed many accessories for her crown, including the amazing lightning bolt hat, pictured bottom right.  Gaga is so goo-goo for Treacy that she stated herself she’d like to design hats for him.  The singer applied for an internship with the milliner last spring.  It seems Hollywood heads aren’t the only ones getting dressed up.  Kate Middleton uses Treacy’s hats so often, she’s apparently commissioned him to make hats for the royal wedding party on her big day!  “When people think of hats, they think of her majesty the queen.  They’re exciting hats to make, because hats and royal weddings are both about magic, happiness and a sense of celebration,” Treacy told The Associated Press on Monday.  This mad hatter has worked with the Duchess of Cornwall and made Camilla Parker Bowles’ hat for her wedding day in 2005.  One of our personal favorite Treacy hats of Kate’s was featured in today’s “Look-of-the-Day.”  Treacy is also apparently working on several of the guests’ toppers, although he won’t be a wedding guest himself.  Why not?  Every other person in Britain is!  Treacy does have one golden rule about headgear though: Keep the Hat On!  He once asked, “You wouldn’t take your underwear off at an event would you?”  No, we wouldn’t.
