Today, Suri Cruise (the daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise) turned six! Her wardrobe is supposedly worth two million dollars (which makes sense, since she’s usually better-dressed than we are), she wears controversial heels, and the mystery that surrounded her “silent birth” has always made her one of the most interesting celebrity babies. For “Pink Wednesday” we picked one of her more “ethnic” looks – that of a flamenco dancer while on a walk with her parents in Spain. It was custom-made for her by El Taller de Lina. Suri even topped off the dress with red and white ballroom dancing shoes for kids – great commitment to a look! Happy Birthday little girl!

Leave it to Sarah Jessica to still look sexy while pregnant! With the spring season upon us, it makes sense to feature an elegant woman demonstrating rebirth. (Although, we didn’t even realize this was a maternity dress, until further inspection!) Here is Miss Parker at the world premiere of Season Five of Sex and the City in 2002. She is sporting a soft baby pink empire-waist Narcisco Rodriguez dress accented by a simple black band. Complemented by her strappy heels, sparkly clutch and flower-pin bracelet, SJP looks like a girl ready for a night out on the town (even if she’ll only be sipping virgin drinks!)
In the 1995 film Circle of Friends, three childhood friends attend University College in Dublin during the 1950s. Along the lengthy and bumpy road, the three girls manage to get their hearts broken, not just by the men they fall in love with, but also by each other. During their happier times together, they attend a dance in the beginning of their first semester, pictured here. Saffron Burrows plays Nan Mahon, the leader of the group. Although she’s not older, she certainly acts and dresses the part to impress… older men. Seen here, Nan looks divine in a charm pink, halter dress, with ruby lips, and her bright, beautiful auburn locks up in a french twist. (Fun fact: Charm Pink is a medium roseish tone that was first coined in 1948.) This same night that Nan wows everyone in her beautiful frock, is also where she gains the attention of an older man by the name of Simon Westward, played by a young Colin Firth, and later gets herself into a heap of trouble. This charming, funny, smart, heartbreaking film is worth watching any day of the year, but it makes for a perfect “Pink Wednesday” addition to our “Irish week.” Circle of Friends has a star-studded cast including Minnie Driver, Chris O’Donnell, and Alan Cumming, so be sure to pick it up this season if you haven’t already seen it!
This editor has been known to state that pink is not her favorite color, however, when it comes to this Wednesday’s “Look-of-the-Day,” it is hard to deny that any woman who has ever watched The Sound of Music has wanted to dance in this iconic dress. We’re talking about Liesl Von Trapp’s soft, powder pink chiffon frock she frolics around in with her secret boyfriend, Rolf, while singing “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” underneath the romantic gazebo lamps during a rainstorm. This pink dress holds a very dear place in this editor’s heart, because this is the first onscreen dress that sparked an interest in fashion, and eventually, this blog. At four-years-old, my mother sat me down to watch one of the greatest musicals of all time, and since then I have always wanted to add this beautiful piece to my closet. (Note: All of the Disney princesses’ gowns don’t count because they had no real dimensions, since they’re cartoons!) But watching Liesl run down those stairs and fly over benches will be forever embedded in my memory! Three-time Oscar winning costume designer Dorothy Jeakins, outfitted the 1965 Best Picture winner and has an impressive resume. She won her first Academy Award for her initial job on Joan of Arc in 1948, and went on to work on South Pacific, True Grit (the original), The Way We Were, and The Music Man. Even though Jeakins was nominated for The Sound of Music, she did not win, but Dorothy’s work from The Sound of Music will always stand out as the best of her best. (To me anyway!)
Dirty Dancing may not be your everyday romance (considering it includes topics of controversy that we’ll fail to mention), but this editor has been in love with dance all of her life and cannot ignore the beautiful powder pink dress included in the final scene of this film. Jennifer Grey plays Frances “Baby” Houseman, whose family spends a 1960s summer at a holiday camp in the Catskill Mountains. She attends Kellerman’s closing celebration in this delicate dusty rose number that she pulls off effortlessly. Costume designer Hilary Rosenfeld sure knew how to pick ‘em! This dress has a stunning, tight bodice with a contrasting yet complementary flowing skirt. When Baby is taken out of her corner and put center stage, where she belongs with her first love, Johnny Castle, she wows the crowd with what she learned that summer! (It’s hilarious now to think the worst thing she was doing that summer was dancing provocatively… Oh yeah, and sleeping with Patrick Swayze! But I’m sure that’s tame compared to what some parents have to worry about today!) Dirty Dancing celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and this scene has become a famous entity all by itself. It’s been recreated in other recent romances, including last summer’s Crazy, Stupid, Love, and the 2010 French comedy, HeartBreaker (L’arnacoeur). Baby’s famous dress was certainly made for spinning and twirling, and Grey and Swayze knew how to work its magic into their mambo! You have to see it in all its glory: Click Here!
This “Pink Wednesday” is also the first day of February, and in honor of Valentine’s Day (which is this editor’s birthday), we’ll be featuring our favorite romantic outfits in TV and film. Here is Sarah Jessica Parker as her alter-ego, Carrie Bradshaw, in one of her best outfits during the final season of Sex and the City with Mikhail Baryshnikov playing her boyfriend, Aleksandr Petrovsky. Carrie yearns for this bright pink Oscar de la Renta cocktail dress (from his Spring 2004 Collection) earlier in the episode, and Petrovsky surprises her with the frock and a night at the ballet. She accessorizes it with a beautiful pair of T-strap silver stilettos and a cropped tuxedo jacket. It should be a night to remember, but the old-fashioned romance is just too much for the modern city girl, and Carrie faints right outside Lincoln Center! They decide to get McDonald’s instead, mixing old-world Russia with new-world America by slow-dancing in the fast food joint.
This “Tuesday Twosome” is extra special because it features some of our editors’ best friends! (Fun Fact: The sexy brunette on the right is actually this editor’s oldest friend, as we met in preschool!) The lovely couple, Danielle and Rob, got engaged this past Sunday and we’re so excited that they get their own post! Here they are at a recent wedding, looking smashing as usual! Danielle is wearing a very pretty pink strapless cocktail dress with an awesome statement necklace and matching bracelet, while Rob dons a light blue button-down with gray pants and a matching navy and silver striped tie. Their outfits are as well-coordinated as they are for each other. Congrats! <3
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Wednesday’s homage to the color pink, we’re featuring Eva Longoria’s beautiful, pastel hued outfit for both “Look-of-the-Day” and for “Wednesday’s Shoe!” Longoria is good friends with designer genius, Victoria Beckham, so naturally she has been seen wearing her friend’s fabulous frocks! Beckham personally styled her friend when Longoria promoted her cookbook back in April. The dress is from Beckham’s Spring/Summer 2011 Collection and is perfectly paired with a pair of Brian Atwood’s satin Maniac stilettos. Longoria’s look is nicely balanced between her dark, luscious locks and smokey eyes, against the soft, subtle palette of the simple, yet striking gam revealer! Move over Rachel Zoe, Beckham does it all, and apparently styling comes perfectly natural!
Breakfast at Tiffany’s may have made the little black dress internationally famous, but Holly Golightly’s little pink dress is also quite adorable! Designed by Hubert de Givenchy (like the rest of Audrey’s beautiful clothes in this film), this sleeveless cocktail dress is accented by its cute bow at the waist and highlighted by its matching coat and sparking tiara! This frock sold for a whopping $192,000 in 2007 when it went to auction at Christie’s! Although this outfit certainly looks like lots of fun, it’s unfortunately the dress Holly has on when she finds out that her brother has died. Man, if you take out the pretty clothes in this movie, it might be one of the most depressing films ever made! Fun Fact: When our editors were little girls, they received the limited edition Barbie dolls created to look like Ms. Audrey Hepburn in this particular costume (pictured, bottom left), but one of them just couldn’t keep her in the box… toys are meant to be played with! And although Holly immediately lost all monetary value when she was freed from her plastic cage, at least she’ll forever remain in this editor’s heart as the prettiest Barbie doll she’s ever had!
Although we just featured Camilla Belle in our new section of “Crazy Look We Love”, Camilla has certainly been the belle of the ball for some time as a fashion “It” Girl who makes very daring choices. Here she chose simply, but looked anything but, in her pale pink Ateen dress and well-coordinated Miu Miu Mary Janes at the premiere of Dry Land. Belle manages to look sexy, sophisticated, and subtle, while exuding confidence and maintaining her less-is-more outlook with natural tresses and a dewy, fresh face. Camilla continues to impress us as an icon-in-the-making and has proven herself as one to be watched closely. Belle is unafraid to try something new, which is what we love about her! In our generation, it’s hard to pick out individuals who fit the description of classic beauty, but this girl has it all and makes it look oh-so-effortless!
