Words on Fashion

In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy.  In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it.” – Lindsay Lohan, as Cady Heron, in Mean Girls.

Look-of-the-Day

This Halloween trio has a special connection to today’s holiday; Mean Girls was probably the first medium to point out how skimpy Halloween costumes have become for girls these days.  Rachel McAdams, as Regina George, is a sexy bunny, Lacey Chabert, as Gretchen Wieners, is a sexy kitten, and Amanda Seyfried, as Karen Smith, is a sexy… mouse?  DUH!  The costume designer, Mary Jane Fort, did a fantastic job outfitting the girls throughout the film and their Halloween gear was no different.  Fort purposely stated that she wanted the girls’ outfits to look like real high school clothing that teenage girls would put together themselves.  These high school seniors are certainly the hottest group of cuddly animals we’ve ever seen!  (Although if they were our own daughters, it wouldn’t be as cute…)  The girls complement one another in matching silver glitter, black pleather, stiletto boots, and fun animal ears.  This look will always be memorable though for its matching movie quote!  Happy Halloween!

Jenna Lyons Now Dating a Woman?

Jenna Lyons, the creative director and president of J.Crew, has left her husband of nine years… for a woman.  Following her messy divorce this past summer with artist Vincent Mazeau, Lyons is now reportedly seeing Courtney Crangi, the sister/business partner of celebrity jeweler Philip Crangi, who runs Giles & Brother.  The oddball fashion force is certainly no stranger to flashy headlines.  Earlier this year, Lyons was heavily criticized (or heavily praised, depending on the source) for an ad featuring her painting the toenails of her young son, Beckett, neon pink (pictured, left).  The ad stated: “Lucky for me I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink.  Toenail painting is way more fun in neon.”  Lyons has revamped the J.Crew label over the last few years by breaking it out of its preppy shell.  The changes have certainly made an impact, as First Lady Michelle Obama is often seen wearing the label, and her glamorous Brooklyn townhouse was featured on Oprah.  Crangi is a mother to three children, and she and Lyons have apparently been friends for years, but the relationship has recently turned romantic.  For such a typically conservative brand, it’s kind of ironic to see all the controversy that’s surrounded it over the past few months…

Look-of-the-Day

It’s no surprise that even the Halloween costumes on Gossip Girl look incredibly chic.  Two years ago on “How to Succeed in Bassness” (Episode 7, Season 3), the notorious Chuck Bass threw a 1920s-themed Halloween party for the opening of his new club, The Gimlet.  Blair looked like one fabulous flapper in this beaded fringe dress by Alberta Ferretti, and her fantastic “St. Petersburg” necklace by Suzanna Dai.  Along with her pinned curls, layered necklace, dainty black gloves and T-strap high heels, Blair certainly looked like one sexy speakeasy-goer.  This is also a costume you could definitely use every piece from in current outfits – an outstanding update on a near 90-year-old look.  Although, it may be a little inappropriate as a theme two years into the Recession; or a great reminder of the way days were spent before the Great Depression…

Look-of-the-Day

This Halloween edition of “Fancy Friday” has a special place in our editors’ hearts.  This editor and her childhood best friend (author of Annie Cuomo) always thought Christina Ricci was their onscreen soul sister, because she seemed to share our dark senses of humor.  Ricci’s performance as Wednesday Addams is still one of my all-time favorite movie characters (and the one Halloween costume I still can’t believe I never wore as a child…  Especially considering my favorite outfit at the time was a long black dress with a white Peter Pan collar!)  Ricci always seemed to have an edge over other child stars, because she ended up in more complex films, like Mermaids and The Addams Family, than the typical garbage young stars usually make.  Recently, our editors turned on Casper, as we usually do when October rolls around (we also indulge in Hocus Pocus and Sleepy Hollow – another film where Ricci rocked another all-time favorite dress), and were amazed at how excited we still felt watching a kids’ movie!  Ricci plays Kat, a headstrong preteen in the 1995 film about “the friendly ghost.”  Casper lends Kat his mother’s gorgeous Edwardian gown made of antique white lace for her Halloween party.  Paired with her lace-up black combat boots, it’s amazing how cool she still looks 16 years later.  In this outfit, Kat and Casper also realize they’re more than just friends when Casper is briefly brought back to life, as Devon Sawa!  Their onscreen dance still warms our hearts (which is very creepy, because they’re only like 14…)  But Sawa’s magnetism is still insanely attractive to us!  Uh, the saddest part of the film is when he’s turned back into a ghost… but we just pretend Kat figured out how to replicate the magic potion to bring this turn-of-the-century hottie back to life for good!  You can view the scene below!

Wednesday’s Shoe

Now these are the ultimate “skinny” stilettos, because they’re nothing but bones!  Want a Halloween-themed heel that’s also stylish and positively bone-chilling?  Then these skeletal sensations from Sears are sure to rock your world!  Priced at $44, they’re also available at several online stores that sell them for a few dollars less; Meijer offers them at $31.99, and Spirit Halloween at $39.99.  And don’t hesitate to match your partner-in-costume this year, Sears also offers the men’s oxford version!

Look-of-the-Day

For our Look-of-the-Day, we’re featuring one of our favorite Halloween costumes, that’s also pink!  In her famous television role as Buffy, in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar dons an 18th century gown that she buys from the magic shop to strike her love interest’s fancy… little does she realize, Angel finds her much more appealing as a woman of the 21st century – kicking butt and killing vampires!  Buffy’s dress takes on a whole new meaning in the episode when all of the characters turn into the roles of their costumes and Buffy becomes a defenseless damsel in distress!  Thankfully all is set right in Sunnydale at the end and Buffy returns to her better, current, powerful self.  Although we love the look, we prefer Buffy the way Angel sees her too.

Wednesday’s Shoe

This “Wednesday’s Shoe” was created by shoe connoisseur Brian Atwood.  These baby pink satin Maniac stilettos are from his Fall/Winter 2011 Collection.  We nailed a hattrick with these babies today, being featured in our “Look-of-the-Day,” our shoe-of-the-day, and they are pink for “Pink Wednesday!”  Below you can see Eva Longoria looking anything but a maniac in Atwood’s perfect complement to her dress by pal Victoria Beckham.

Look-of-the-Day

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Wednesday’s homage to the color pink, we’re featuring Eva Longoria’s beautiful, pastel hued outfit for both “Look-of-the-Day” and for “Wednesday’s Shoe!”  Longoria is good friends with designer genius, Victoria Beckham, so naturally she has been seen wearing her friend’s fabulous frocks!  Beckham personally styled her friend when Longoria promoted her cookbook back in April.  The dress is from Beckham’s Spring/Summer 2011 Collection and is perfectly paired with a pair of Brian Atwood’s satin Maniac stilettos.  Longoria’s look is nicely balanced between her dark, luscious locks and smokey eyes, against the soft, subtle palette of the simple, yet striking gam revealer!  Move over Rachel Zoe, Beckham does it all, and apparently styling comes perfectly natural!

Look-of-the-Day

For this Tuesday Twosome, we are featuring our favorite living, fashion icon, who else but Victoria Beckham, and one of her adorable sons, second-born, Romeo James.  As Posh looks just-so, her partner-in-style keeps up and in stride with his fashion-forward mum.  The two of them make quite the statement in their business-savvy attire, Victoria in her smart, silhouetted, pencil skirt and button-down dress shirt, and Romeo in his perfect pinstripes, boyishly tousled waves, and those darling dimples.  Romeo resembles his mother the most out of his siblings and we’re sure he inherited those features from his lovely leading lady… if only she smiled more for the camera!  We cannot wait to see what modeling gigs this kid gets when he’s older; so far he’s the biggest clothes horse out of the expanding, British brood, but we’ll just have to wait and see what little Harper Seven brings to the table when she’s old enough to wear heels.  For now, Romeo does just fine holding his own on the red (sometimes caramel-colored) carpet!
