Look-of-the-Day

Forty years ago today, our editors’ parents went out on their very first date.  An Irish Marine and an Italian girl from New York City would eventually settle down and have two daughters (us!)  What better movie to discuss on their anniversary than a romantic comedy written by an Irish Marine about an Italian girl from New York City?!  John Patrick Shanley’s script comes to life starring Cher in this 1987 film as Loretta Castorini, a frugal bookkeeper who ends up falling for her boring fiance’s passionate brother (played by Nicolas Cage).  This movie also has a particularly great makeover scene, when Loretta decides she needs to spice up her life!  She spots a great strapless maroon cocktail dress while window shopping, and decides to go for it!  Cher looks great attending the opera with a full head of dark Italian curls, a long glamorous black coat, the dark red dress, and a very young Nicolas Cage on her arm!  It’s the magic of “la bella luna” that leads to true love!

Jenna Lyons Now Dating a Woman?

Jenna Lyons, the creative director and president of J.Crew, has left her husband of nine years… for a woman.  Following her messy divorce this past summer with artist Vincent Mazeau, Lyons is now reportedly seeing Courtney Crangi, the sister/business partner of celebrity jeweler Philip Crangi, who runs Giles & Brother.  The oddball fashion force is certainly no stranger to flashy headlines.  Earlier this year, Lyons was heavily criticized (or heavily praised, depending on the source) for an ad featuring her painting the toenails of her young son, Beckett, neon pink (pictured, left).  The ad stated: “Lucky for me I ended up with a boy whose favorite color is pink.  Toenail painting is way more fun in neon.”  Lyons has revamped the J.Crew label over the last few years by breaking it out of its preppy shell.  The changes have certainly made an impact, as First Lady Michelle Obama is often seen wearing the label, and her glamorous Brooklyn townhouse was featured on Oprah.  Crangi is a mother to three children, and she and Lyons have apparently been friends for years, but the relationship has recently turned romantic.  For such a typically conservative brand, it’s kind of ironic to see all the controversy that’s surrounded it over the past few months…

Look-of-the-Day

In honor of Gossip Girl‘s 5th season premiere last night, we’re featuring stars Leighton Meester and Blake Lively, who are no strangers to “Tuesday Twosome.”  As privileged, young Manhattanites, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen are privy to the best schools, colleges, restaurants, entertainment and, of course, clothes!  Here they are in Episode 4 of the 1st season.  In the series, Blair’s mother, Eleanor, runs her own fashion line and chooses her daughter to model some of her looks when it gets picked up by Henri Bendel, while Serena comes to the photoshoot for support.  But… like every other thing in Blair’s life, Serena ends up getting the gig instead, due to her outgoing and fun personality.  Of course, drama ensues.  Eleanor’s fictional fashion line is actually the work of Abigail Lorick.  Above, some of her looks are perfectly cast – the prim and proper Blair wears a formfitting black and yellow belted dress with matching accessories and sweptback hair, while fun-loving Serena sports a loose-fitting gray, white and black frock with her sunny locks blowing in the breeze!

Look-of-the-Day

This picture only makes us wonder how Macaulay Culkin ever left this pint-size stunner “home alone.”  Here is Mila Kunis at the New York premiere of her latest film, Friends with Benefits, wearing one sexy Lanvin dress.  Paired with satin black pumps and blown-out brunette locks, Kunis certainly looks like a friend we’d like to have around.  Just because Natalie Portman won the gold for Black Swan doesn’t mean the understudy can’t have just as much fun!  Because if that includes dresses like this, the Marine Corps Ball, yelling in Russian and Justin Timberlake, then we’re so in!

Look-of-the-Day

One of our editors was nearly named Sabrina, due to her parents’ fondness for this 1954 flick.  Sabrina is the story of the title character played by Audrey Hepburn, and our choice for the start of the summer’s “Look-of-the-Day.”  Sabrina is the daughter of a chauffeur caught between the love and lust of two brothers.  Here, Hepburn epitomizes Long Island preppiness wearing white shorts, bare feet and a relaxed plaid shirt while sailing the Long Island Sound.  With Edith Head and Hubert de Givenchy costuming the film, it’s no surprise that even Sabrina’s downtime digs are still divine!

Not the NY Mets of Queens, These are the Queens of the NY Met!

The Metropolitan Museum Costume Gala has a reputation for attracting some wild looks (well, it’s a costume ball after-all!), but this year had some downright sleek and stunning looks.  Actresses, fashion mavens, singers and celebs attended this year’s event to honor late designer Alexander McQueen.  Our hands-down favorite goes to Gossip Girl star Blake Lively in her gorgeous with a soft gray pailette-embroidered Chanel Haute Couture gown (or sari of sorts).  Lively accessorized her looks with Lorraine Schwartz jewelry and cream Christian Louboutin strappy heels.  The famous blonde had recently dyed her hair light red, but she looked just beautiful in this fantastic frock.  The gowns pictured above were also some of our favorites, even though they were pretty tame for the Met Gala.  German actress Diane Kruger (pictured, top left) who is known for her daring fashion choices, wore  this black-skirted Jason Wu gown with a silver embellished top that took 500 hours of hand embroidery, according to People.  Kruger also carried a Jimmy Choo bag and donned Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.  The hottest mom on television, Sofia Vergara (pictured, top middle) of Modern Family, showed off her curves in a black, white and green Carolina Herrera gown with Japanese flowers decorating the front.  Model (and Mrs. Andy Roddick, pictured, top right) Brooklyn Decker wore a hot pink Michael Kors long-sleeved gown and mirrored platform sandals from the same line.  Maybe a little simple (or too damn bright) for the sophisticated New York gathering (it looks a little like Malibu Barbie’s big night out), but she’s young enough (only 24 – dear lord!) to pull it off.   The better-dressed half of the Olsen twins, Ashley (pictured, bottom left), wore an off-the-shoulder vintage black Dior Couture gown with cream puffy-sleeves and metallic Christian Louboutin pumps.  Olsen got criticized for the look, but we think that must have been one of the few glamorous dresses that survived the horrid 1980s.  Freida  Pinto (pictured, bottom middle) also got flack for her “black tie” look.  The Indian actress donned a white silk Chanel Haute Couture gown with a masculine Chopard watch and Chanel clutch.  But she looked beautiful as always, and as former cater waiters/bartenders, our editors had a soft spot for this shout-out to the staff!  And the most famous niece in Hollywood, Emma Roberts (pictured, bottom right) had on a white silk, cut-out Michael Kors column gown and Chopard diamond drop earrings on.  She’s looking quite grown-up these days!  Who was the worst-dressed?  Mary-Kate Olsen and Kirsten Dunst finally killed “hippie chic” with  their hideous looks.  Fergie and Naomi Campbell looked like they were covered in toilet paper.  But our biggest criticism of the event?  Again with the NUDE!!  Blech!  Salma Hayek, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Maggie Q, Kate Hudson, Taylor Swift, Naomi Watts, Jessica Alba, Ashley Greene, Renee Zellweger, and even teenager Dakota Fanning – young stars, old stars, new stars – and many well-dressed celebs all in beige!  The color is not flattering on anyone, so we don’t know why this trend has taken hold.  Hell, even some of the dresses we liked had nude and cream-colored accents, but to look like a human body-stocking on the red carpet is just strange.  Then again, every dress we liked other than Brooklyn Decker’s seemed to be black and white… guess we’re not diverse, either!  People, it’s a costume gala – try to be a little more adventurous next year!

Look-of-the-Day

Carrie Bradshaw was the fashion icon of the turn of the 20th century, so it’s no surprise we’re still loving her clothes 10 years later.  This asymmetrical floral dress designed by Richard Tyler for his 2000 Spring/Summer line.  Sarah Jessica Parker wore it on the episode “Cock a Doodle Do” of Sex and the City when she falls into the pond at Central Park.  But before she gets soaking wet, she looks smoking hot in this frilly frock.  The soft pink color looks like a bunch of blossoming hyacinths – a beautiful hue for a season saturated with sunshine and spectacular posies.
