Words on Fashion

Hollywood invented our perception of glamour.  And now it’s just boring.  At one time Hollywood had style – now it’s just stylists.  It’s the most ridiculous thing.  Marlene Dietrich didn’t have a stylist.  Marilyn Monroe didn’t have a stylist. They had style.” – Renowned Irish milliner and designer Philip Treacy.

The Top Toppers of the Kentucky Derby

Who the heck is looking at horses when you have a parade of pretty people prinked to the nines?  We mentioned how much we loved Marisa Miller’s look at this year’s Kentucky Derby, but we failed to mention our favorite hats!  With the popularity of millinery resurging (thanks to Philip Treacy), it’s no wonder more and more people seem interested in dressing up their heads!  Sportscaster Erin Andrews looked adorable in her black, white and pink ensemble, while actress Melissa Biggs looked beautiful in her floral frock and classic hat.  But our favorite topper would have to go to a mystery attendee pictured above – an oversized hat with classic lines in chocolate, white and pink, complemented by a spray of flowers, it is nothing but southern and sophistication – the embodiment of the Kentucky Derby.

Look-of-the-Day

Definitely the most modern-looking guest, Prince William’s cousin, fashionista Zara Phillips, looked quite striking in silver and black on the big day.  Zara, Princess Anne’s only daughter, is the next in line to get married (on July 30th of this year), but even though she wasn’t the bride last week, she wasn’t going to melt into the background at this wedding!  Phillips is wearing a nearly vertical black Philip Treacy hat, and a sleek silver dress by Irish designer Paul Costelloe.  Complementing this modern look with old-fashioned black Mary Jane stilettos was just adorable.  (Just like yesterday’s Look-of-the-Day!)  Accompanied by her professional rugby-playing fiance, this royal equestrian is sure to turn heads at her own nuptials this summer.

Look-of-the-Day

Probably the most famous attendees at the royal wedding were this “Tuesday Twosome,” David and Victoria Beckham (the other “royal” couple of England).  David looks just delectable in his Ralph Lauren purple label morning suit and top hat.  And Posh looks, well… pregnant and posh.  As, usual.  This is the perfect “Look-of-the-Day,” incorporating the best-dressed guests at the royal nuptials, as well as featuring David the day after his birthday, and Victoria donning a maternity dress from her own line (hint, hint on what we’ll be discussing this weekend for Mother’s Day…)  Posh was also in navy blue – a perfect tribute to our SEALs for catching Bin Laden!  Our favorite Spice Girl accessorized her look with 7-inch Christian Louboutin platform stilettos, and a headpiece by designer-of-the-moment Philip Treacy.  Everyone’s eyes were on William and Kate, but we think these Brits are still the cutest couple of the UK!

Look-of-the-Day

We were going to save this look until the final day before the royal wedding, because it’s our favorite outfit of Kate Middleton’s, but it just looked too perfect for an Easter Sunday!  This powder blue brocade, princess-style (how appropriate) Issa coat is just stunning.  Paired with a simple white dress and navy stilettos, this English girl looks quite ready to step into the role of a royal.  The fantastic matching blue and white hat is by the fabulous Philip Treacy.  Miss Middleton wasn’t at Easter here, but actually at the 2009 wedding of Prince William’s friend, Captain Nicholas van Cutsem.  Only a few more days, and we’ll be seeing what Kate will have on for own big day…  Do we think it’ll be designed by Issa?

The Mad Hatter Philip Treacy

“What a regrettably large head you have.  I would very much like to hat it.  I used to hat The White Queen, you know.  Her head was so small,” Tim Burton’s version of the Mad Hatter tells the Red Queen.  It seems a lot of hatters get to work with the heads of royals… Philip Treacy is the Irish milliner future Princess Kate is a huge fan of.  Born in Galway, Treacy studied journalism at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.  Treacy is now based in London and runs a very successful business there.  He created hats for Alexander McQueen’s collection for Givenchy, as well as Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel.  Treacy has also designed for Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen, and Valentino, as well as for the Harry Potter movies.  One of his more famous toppers was Sarah Jessica Parker’s for the London premiere of Sex and the City (pictured left).   One of the world’s wackiest and most innovative dressers on the planet, Lady Gaga, is gaga for Treacy, as well.  He has designed many accessories for her crown, including the amazing lightning bolt hat, pictured bottom right.  Gaga is so goo-goo for Treacy that she stated herself she’d like to design hats for him.  The singer applied for an internship with the milliner last spring.  It seems Hollywood heads aren’t the only ones getting dressed up.  Kate Middleton uses Treacy’s hats so often, she’s apparently commissioned him to make hats for the royal wedding party on her big day!  “When people think of hats, they think of her majesty the queen.  They’re exciting hats to make, because hats and royal weddings are both about magic, happiness and a sense of celebration,” Treacy told The Associated Press on Monday.  This mad hatter has worked with the Duchess of Cornwall and made Camilla Parker Bowles’ hat for her wedding day in 2005.  One of our personal favorite Treacy hats of Kate’s was featured in today’s “Look-of-the-Day.”  Treacy is also apparently working on several of the guests’ toppers, although he won’t be a wedding guest himself.  Why not?  Every other person in Britain is!  Treacy does have one golden rule about headgear though: Keep the Hat On!  He once asked, “You wouldn’t take your underwear off at an event would you?”  No, we wouldn’t.
