Look-of-the-Day

What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction.”  It seems the color of the sun will forever play an interesting role in Katniss Everdeen’s life… Here she is with fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) in The Hunger Games.  The two make quite an attractive pair in a bright blue suit, and a soft, non-threatening yellow dress – nothing like what Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) has worn prior to this moment in her young life.  Without revealing too much about the series or the film, this seemingly happy moment will only be short-lived… Let the countdown to Catching Fire begin!

Happy Hunger Games!  And may the odds be ever in your favor!”  Who else would we feature on “Pink Wednesday” during our tribute (pun intended) to The Hunger Games, but Effie Trinket?!  Played by the wonderful and underrated Elizabeth Banks, Effie comes to the Reaping wearing a completely over-the-top magenta skirted suit, black stiletto open-toe booties, and her famous pink hair adorned with a flower hat to match her other ridiculous accessories.  While this is a darker shade of the purplish pink color, costume designer Judianna Makovsky told Vogue how she was heavily influenced by Elsa Schiaparelli, “The woman was a genius. I have to admit, I used a lot of color.  Schiaparelli pink,” when creating the clothes for Capitol citizens. “We looked a lot at Italian fascist architecture that is very imposing.”  Makovsky’s sly marriage of political themes and high-end fashion is present throughout the film.  I must admit, before reading the book, catching a glimpse of Banks dressed as Effie in the movie trailer completely terrified me when she reads off the name, “Primrose Everdeen” to the crowd of District 12.  Standing beside Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Effie shows the sharp contrast between the lives of the citizens of Panem.  While these two women may dress, think, act and live as total opposites, it turns out both of them are much stronger than anyone expected…

Look-of-the-Day

For this “Tuesday Twosome,” we chose our new favorite modern onscreen couple, Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, from last summer’s box office hit, Friends With Benefits.  (There were many other romances we wanted to feature during our Valentine’s Day countdown, but it’s hard to find proper stills of some of our older and foreign favorites!  But Friends with Benefits is definitely our absolute favorite modern rom-com!)  In this fast-paced, witty, atypical romantic comedy, Kunis plays Jamie Rellis, a New York City headhunter who tracks down a savvy blogger named Dylan Harper, played by Timberlake.  As Harper is from Los Angeles and decides to take GQ up on their offer as their new art director, he finds he has only one friend in his new city – Jamie.  Kunis and Timberlake make a perfect pair, playing verbal (and later physical) tennis with incredibly quick jokes, comebacks, and undeniable chemistry.  (Which is why his supposed engagement to Biel made us very upset that these two weren’t a couple…)  Due to the youthfulness of the picture, this dynamic duo is dressed in very fashion-forward business attire.  In this scene, Jamie is coming to pick Dylan up from the airport for his initial interview with GQ.  Although her silk button-down blouse, pencil skirt, and bun are all correct in the corporate world, Jamie’s lightning bolt necklace by Lizzie Scheck might look a little out-of-place (even though it cost $820 in real life!), but it actually provides some foreshadowing for the film.  Timberlake is wearing a look made famous in the mid-1960s by the Rat Pack.  The old cads donned fitted suits with skinny ties, and it seems this look is making its full generational trend return.  (Wait for our full article on that soon…!)  According to costume designer Renee Ehrlich Kalfus, Dylan is “a guy who could have a blog and tell other guys what to do.”  For his work wardrobe, Kalfus selected slim-fit pieces from Dior, Thom Brown, and Save Khaki.  This chic pair is the perfect couple to feature on February 14th in the year 2012!  Happy Valentine’s Day! ❤

Look-of-the-Day

There was a Valentine’s Day marathon of rom-coms running on every channel over the weekend (except probably SPIKE), and we caught this Sandra Bullock hit, The Proposal, last night.  Bullock plays a hard-as-nails New York book editor named Margaret Tate, and her assistant, Andrew, is played by the adorable Ryan Reynolds in this 2009 movie.  Margaret blackmails her poor secretary into marrying her, so she is not deported back to her native Canada.  Bullock wears this impeccably tailored black-pinstriped skirted suit and a pair of Christian Louboutin pumps while she announces the big wedding news to her bosses, and… Andrew!  He’s as surprised as they are, and forces his wicked employer to propose to him properly after leaving their meeting (pictured, below).  Costume designer Catherine Marie Thomas stated, “I was inspired to do this very structured ’40s silhouette because Margaret’s very uptight and regimented, and Sandy was thrilled.  So our departure point was the silhouette of the ’40s, as worn by Katharine Hepburn and Rosalind Russell.  Sandy’s got great legs so you can do a pencil skirt up to the knee, but we purposely made them longer so that she would be more nipped in and would have to alter the way she walked.”  The uptight Margaret Tate is about to meet her match in Andrew, who’s finally had enough of her crap, but the two start to realize there’s more to one another than they originally thought…

Look-of-the-Day

We’ve mentioned that The Family Stone was one of theSkinnyStiletto‘s favorite holiday films earlier this week, and we’re continuing to discuss the cast’s outfits we just love!  Fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker plays an uptight Manhattanite named Meredith who does not fit in with her boyfriend, Everett’s family when she meets them for the first time over Christmas.  Meredith arrives to the Stones’ home in this tailored gray suit, black pointy stiletto pumps, a beautiful black trench coat and a bun so tight and slicked back, it’s practically within Marine Corps hair regulations.  She’s a successful businesswoman, and while her manners and image are picture perfect, her confidence isn’t as nearly put-together.  (Although, we’re completely on her side when Everett’s niece breaks the heel on her ballerina pink pumps.  Umm, hello?  I met you 15 minutes ago and you’re stomping around in a pair of my shoes that probably cost more than your whole wardrobe?  Don’t care if you’re 8, that’s so inappropriate!)  Meredith and Everett (pictured, below) look great together in their professional New York outfits, but their souls aren’t as great a match as they originally thought…

Look-of-the-Day

In celebration of Bastille Day, we had to pick our all-time favorite French girl, Marion Cotillard for July 14th!  Here, the brunette beauty was wearing a lovely light grey belted suit by Christian Dior to announce the Bike in Style Challenge winners in New York.  Her funky shoes were designed by the controversial John Galliano for Dior (the label who Cotillard is the face of).  The strappy silver stilettos have little fertility goddess figurines for heels… which must have worked, because the French star recently welcomed her first child with long-time lover Guillaume Canet!  Always elegant, even when she has an edge – Viva la France!

Look-of-the-Day

This family isn’t just a “Tuesday Twosome” – it’s a “Tuesday Threesome!”  Rockers Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale clean up nicely at their first born, Kingston James McGregor’s baptism in 2007.  Gwen still maintained her signature style in fishnet stockings, white shades, platform heels, red lipstick and bleached blonde locks, but looked demure in an asymmetrical gunmetal skirted suit and cross.  Gavin looks handsome in his beige and white Sunday suit, while Kingston is precious in his white christening outfit.  We guess the family that prays together, stays together!
