Last year, we featured Hilary Swank in P.S. I Love You a couple of times, because other upbeat Irish movies, including The Magdalene Sisters, The Field, Angela’s Ashes, and Bloody Sunday don’t exactly showcase fashion-forward Gaels. Probably because they all tend to be about injustice, Catholic oppression, cultural uprisings and starvation. Anyhow, here’s Holly Kennedy again from the 2007 film. Swanks stars as a widow in New York, who loses her husband to cancer (played by the extremely sexy Scots-Irishman Gerard Butler) and he leaves her twelve final notes to help rebuild her life after he’s gone. (Geez, even Irish romantic comedies are depressing!) This is the final scene of the movie, when Holly returns to Ireland with her mother, played by Kathy Bates. Holly is sporting a classic trench coat, a slim-cut jeans, knee-high black leather boots and supposedly a Marc Jacobs bag. It’s the perfect outfit to trek across the Irish countryside in!

We’ve mentioned that The Family Stone was one of theSkinnyStiletto‘s favorite holiday films earlier this week, and we’re continuing to discuss the cast’s outfits we just love! Fashion icon Sarah Jessica Parker plays an uptight Manhattanite named Meredith who does not fit in with her boyfriend, Everett’s family when she meets them for the first time over Christmas. Meredith arrives to the Stones’ home in this tailored gray suit, black pointy stiletto pumps, a beautiful black trench coat and a bun so tight and slicked back, it’s practically within Marine Corps hair regulations. She’s a successful businesswoman, and while her manners and image are picture perfect, her confidence isn’t as nearly put-together. (Although, we’re completely on her side when Everett’s niece breaks the heel on her ballerina pink pumps. Umm, hello? I met you 15 minutes ago and you’re stomping around in a pair of my shoes that probably cost more than your whole wardrobe? Don’t care if you’re 8, that’s so inappropriate!) Meredith and Everett (pictured, below) look great together in their professional New York outfits, but their souls aren’t as great a match as they originally thought…
The trench coat is the definitive piece of outerwear that screams style, sexiness and sleekness for both genders. In fiction, these fashionable coats show up on spies, comic book heroes, and in several of the most epic romantic scenes in cinema – including this one! In Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Audrey Hepburn sports her trench twice: first, when her mysterious ex-husband shows up for a visit and Paul discovers a little bit more about Holly’s past; the other is the last scene of the movie – which is why it made sense to make it the final “Look-of-the-Day” celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the film. While nearly all of the costumes in the film were made by Hubert de Givenchy, this gorgeous raincoat was made by none other than Burberry! It’s no surprise the British label went on to become the go-to choice when buying the famous military-inspired coats. Holly and Paul are two no-name lost souls, just like the pet cat, but they realize they’re going to disappear if they don’t find each other first… And in the pouring rain in the streets of Manhattan, they finally do.
Kate Middleton will marry her prince in 10 days, and in celebration of the beautiful Brit’s style, we’re counting down her ten best looks till the big day! (It’s convenient Kate and Will are tying the knot on a Friday… a wedding dress is perfect for our “Fancy Friday” segment!) This “Tuesday Twosome” is dedicated to the handsome couple themselves, appearing together for the first time after their breakup and reunion, at Prince William’s RAF Graduation. A double-breasted Reiss trench coat + a sexy military uniform? Yes, please! The United Kingdom’s couple put on a united front as England’s future king earned his pilot wings. We can’t wait to see what these two will be wearing on April 29th!
Amy Adams certainly appears to be Irish here, but she’s actually an American traveling through the Emerald Isle in Leap Year. Her trench coat, gray pencil skirt with a hint of yellow lace, flowered blouse, golf green vest and red hair make her appear like the epitome of a modern Irish woman – but alas, she’s just playing a wild rover. Still, it’s a flawless example of an outfit for the first month of Spring – feminine, floral, with a hint of pastel, and a classic cover-up for those rainy days.
Hilary Swank looks quite wonderful for a widow in this 2008 adaptation of Cecelia Ahern’s novel, P.S. I Love You. Swank plays Holly Kennedy, who visits Ireland in this beautiful black and white, double-breasted plaid trench coat. It looks fantastic with a matching black turtleneck, fuzzy white beret and red flower pin. It’s not surprising Holly made Gerard Butler, Harry Connick Jr. AND Jeffrey Dean Morgan all fall for her in the span of a two hours. P.S. We love your style Mrs. Kennedy.
