Look-of-the-Day

Leave it to Sarah Jessica to still look sexy while pregnant!  With the spring season upon us, it makes sense to feature an elegant woman demonstrating rebirth.  (Although, we didn’t even realize this was a maternity dress, until further inspection!)  Here is Miss Parker at the world premiere of Season Five of Sex and the City in 2002.  She is sporting a soft baby pink empire-waist Narcisco Rodriguez dress accented by a simple black band.  Complemented by her strappy heels, sparkly clutch and flower-pin bracelet, SJP looks like a girl ready for a night out on the town (even if she’ll only be sipping virgin drinks!)

Look-of-the-Day

This “Pink Wednesday” is also the first day of February, and in honor of Valentine’s Day (which is this editor’s birthday), we’ll be featuring our favorite romantic outfits in TV and film.  Here is Sarah Jessica Parker as her alter-ego, Carrie Bradshaw, in one of her best outfits during the final season of Sex and the City with Mikhail Baryshnikov playing her boyfriend, Aleksandr Petrovsky.  Carrie yearns for this bright pink Oscar de la Renta cocktail dress (from his Spring 2004 Collection) earlier in the episode, and Petrovsky surprises her with the frock and a night at the ballet.  She accessorizes it with a beautiful pair of T-strap silver stilettos and a cropped tuxedo jacket.  It should be a night to remember, but the old-fashioned romance is just too much for the modern city girl, and Carrie faints right outside Lincoln Center!  They decide to get McDonald’s instead, mixing old-world Russia with new-world America by slow-dancing in the fast food joint.

Look-of-the-Day

Samantha Jones has been the small screen’s favorite sex kitten ever since Sex and the City first aired in 1998.  The show was so popular, it was turned into a movie where the girls still dressed like stars!  Here, Kim Cattrall is buzzing like a sexy bumblebee as her alter-ego in yellow and black.  The jacket with jagged kerfs is Thierry Mugler, the pencil skirt is Herve Leger, the silver peep-toe stilettos are Dior, the bag is Hunting Season and the sunglasses are by Baby Phat.  Cattrall is over 50 here, but still looks like one seductive working girl!

The Mad Hatter Philip Treacy

“What a regrettably large head you have.  I would very much like to hat it.  I used to hat The White Queen, you know.  Her head was so small,” Tim Burton’s version of the Mad Hatter tells the Red Queen.  It seems a lot of hatters get to work with the heads of royals… Philip Treacy is the Irish milliner future Princess Kate is a huge fan of.  Born in Galway, Treacy studied journalism at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin.  Treacy is now based in London and runs a very successful business there.  He created hats for Alexander McQueen’s collection for Givenchy, as well as Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel.  Treacy has also designed for Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen, and Valentino, as well as for the Harry Potter movies.  One of his more famous toppers was Sarah Jessica Parker’s for the London premiere of Sex and the City (pictured left).   One of the world’s wackiest and most innovative dressers on the planet, Lady Gaga, is gaga for Treacy, as well.  He has designed many accessories for her crown, including the amazing lightning bolt hat, pictured bottom right.  Gaga is so goo-goo for Treacy that she stated herself she’d like to design hats for him.  The singer applied for an internship with the milliner last spring.  It seems Hollywood heads aren’t the only ones getting dressed up.  Kate Middleton uses Treacy’s hats so often, she’s apparently commissioned him to make hats for the royal wedding party on her big day!  “When people think of hats, they think of her majesty the queen.  They’re exciting hats to make, because hats and royal weddings are both about magic, happiness and a sense of celebration,” Treacy told The Associated Press on Monday.  This mad hatter has worked with the Duchess of Cornwall and made Camilla Parker Bowles’ hat for her wedding day in 2005.  One of our personal favorite Treacy hats of Kate’s was featured in today’s “Look-of-the-Day.”  Treacy is also apparently working on several of the guests’ toppers, although he won’t be a wedding guest himself.  Why not?  Every other person in Britain is!  Treacy does have one golden rule about headgear though: Keep the Hat On!  He once asked, “You wouldn’t take your underwear off at an event would you?”  No, we wouldn’t.

Look-of-the-Day

Carrie Bradshaw was the fashion icon of the turn of the 20th century, so it’s no surprise we’re still loving her clothes 10 years later.  This asymmetrical floral dress designed by Richard Tyler for his 2000 Spring/Summer line.  Sarah Jessica Parker wore it on the episode “Cock a Doodle Do” of Sex and the City when she falls into the pond at Central Park.  But before she gets soaking wet, she looks smoking hot in this frilly frock.  The soft pink color looks like a bunch of blossoming hyacinths – a beautiful hue for a season saturated with sunshine and spectacular posies.

Look-of-the-Day

Sarah Jessica Parker is no stranger to being a clotheshorse, and the 2008 Sex and the City movie was no different.  This “Tuesday’s Twosome” is Miss Carrie Bradshaw and her best gay pal, Stanford Blatch, in coordinating pink.  Carrie wears an asymmetrical version of Victorian pink floral with a bit of white lace sticking out.  But, this isn’t your grandmother’s floral; instead of looking like she just stepped out of the 19th Century, Carrie looks as modern as ever with peach strappy heels, a studded white belt and an ostrich feather clutch.  Stanford looks just as dapper in a gray and white checked suit, soft pink button-down shirt, white dress shoes and signature bow-tie.  They look like the perfect Manhattanite pair on a Spring afternoon.

Look-of-the-Day

Everyone’s favorite fashionista Carrie Bradshaw is today’s choice for Look-of-the-Day.  This outfit comes from the show’s last episode, “An American Girl in Paris, Part Deux.”  Carrie walks the streets in the city of love wearing a red and black polka-dotted Balenciaga dress with a pop of green tulle, a white-cuffed black LaCroix coat, white Christian Louboutin pumps and a charming bright red umbrella.  Miss Bradshaw looks quintessentially French here, but she doesn’t stay for long!

Look-of-the-Day

Sex and the City was one of the first TV shows to treat their actors like mini-models, and the streets like pseudo-runways (which is the way every woman should feel when leaving the house).  On this sunny March day, theSkinnyStiletto is getting excited for warm weather, and thought we’d choose this perfect pink dress on Kristin Davis from Season 6 for our Look-of-the-Day.  Charlotte had just suffered a miscarriage, but she knows she has to bounce back and this is the outfit she chose to do it in.  When looking at the fabulous website BabyGirlBoutique we came across this 1940s version of the dress, but unfortunately it seems to be sold out!  We also did find this gorgeous flowing version pictured on the right on AlisaDresses.com.

The Only Time Naked is Boring

SJP in the "Naked Dress"

“It’s a scientific fact that if you say ‘naked’ three or more times, to any man, he has to cross his legs.” – Sally Harper, Coupling.  Miss Carrie Bradshaw introduced the “naked dress” during the first season of Sex and the City in 1998.  It became iconic as her profile pic for her column, and as the dress she wore on her and Mr. Big’s first date.  While Sarah Jessica looked quite sultry in her nude mini, we here at TheSkinnyStiletto believe when it comes to formal wear, isn’t naked kind of… well, boring?

Nude served SJP as sexy and hip, and it can elongate even the shortest of legs when worn correctly in a stiletto, but when Hollywood’s fairest beauties select it for the red carpet, they look very washed-out.  Yet, over the last two years many fashion critics have been giving these women accolades for selecting the perfect hue for their skintones – TheSkinnyStiletto disagrees.  While we absolutely adore these modern-day Snow Whites, we think their beautiful faces, bodies and hair would stand out much more if they chose soft pink or peach gowns.  These couture frocks also lose their gorgeous detailing when worn by creatures blessed with the same ivory-coloring as their material.  So ladies, we ask you – no, beg you! – save naked for date night.
